John Burcham Clamp (1869-1931)
John Clamp was born in Sydney and was educated at the Christ Church School where he won the Mort Scholarship in 1882. As an architect in private practice he carried out many alterations and additions. One of his more recognisable works was the rebuilding of the Farmer & Co building in Pitt Street (now part of the Grace Bros complex). His most significant ecclesiastical commission was probably the Sydney Church of England Grammar School Chapel at North Sydney. Clamp was responsible for the restoration of the interior of Christ Church following a fire in August 1905. His work in Christ Church includes: the St Laurence Chapel, with its distinctive crown of thorns motif (1912); the reredos (1905); the organ screen, also with crown of thorns motif (1914); and the cover on the font (c 1904). He also designed the new rectory and vestries in 1904 and the school building (now the parish hall) in 1905. Back to Architects... |
