Sydney Railway Terminus

The Sydney Railway Terminus (Central Station) has existed in the neighbourhood of Christ Church since 1855. It started as a single wooden terminus in the Cleveland Paddock on the southern side of Devonshire Street. The old terminus, which came to be known as Redfern Station, gradually grew until safety concerns led to the construction of the new terminus a few hundred yards north on the other side of Devonshire Street. The foundation stone of the current complex was laid on 30 September 1902 and the corner stone of the tower was laid on 26 September 1903. The new terminus was officially opened on 4 August 1906. The office accommodation was completed in 1916 and the clock tower was not completed until 12 March 1921 when the hands of the clock were set in motion. The approaches and platforms for the Sydney Electric System at the eastern end of the station were opened in December 1926. | Central Station, circa 1906. |
