Christ Church Schools: Mort Scholarship

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald (27 December 1905 p 8) records of the Mort Prize:

"For Mr. Mort’s munificence in building the schools a special vote of thanks was tendered him on behalf of all sections of the parishioners, and later on, the Council decided to set apart for the commemoration of his generosity the 17th day of October in every year, when a short religious service was held in the primary school, the prizes for the year distributed and address delivered. For it was on 17th October, 1860, that the schools were opened in the presence of the Dean of Sydney, the Rev. W. Cowper, the Churchwardens, the local Ward and Mr. Mort, and at the end of the year the scholars’ roll showed an increase from 468 to 776 over the previous year’s attendance. In the following year Mr. T. S. Mort announced his intention of giving an annual prize of £5 to the best boy scholar in the school. The winning of this scholarship has always been a coveted distinction."

A speech at a memorial to T S Mort in 1878 recorded:

"Out of his own pocket Mr Mort paid for that building; and not even then satisfied, he put his hand in his pocket, and for the head boy and girl in that school, every year, he placed the sum of £5 in a bank to lie there and accrue with interest until such time as they were 21 years of age." - Sydney Morning Herald (23 May 1878, p 3 c 2).
