Children at Christ Church St Laurence

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.  (Matthew 19:14)

Christ Church St Laurence delights in having children worshipping in its midst.

Our Children's Program is designed to teach and nurture children in the ways of the Lord and deepen their understanding of the Christian faith as they grow in awe and wonder about God’s marvellous creation and His great love for His people.

Children’s Church

Each Sunday, our children begin their worship by lighting a candle to remind them that God is with us as we sing, pray and listen to the Bible lesson for the day.  Worship is followed by the art and craft activities which relate to the story. Always stimulating, creative and lots of fun, these art and craft activities provide  children with an opportunity to reflect on and reinforce the lessons learnt.

The curriculum is “The Seasons of the Spirit”, an ecumenical resource, which may be viewed at www.spiritseasons.com. The sacred stories for our Children’s Church follow the lectionary used by Christ Church St Laurence in adult worship, so parents and children return to their daily living together renewed by the same spiritual message.

Children are encouraged to extend the compassion of Christ by bringing to Children’s Church a tin of food for the needy people ministered to by our Cana Homeless Shelter.

When and where

Children’s Church is held in the Parish Hall at 9.00am each Sunday during school term.  Parents are most welcome to stay with their children or attend the 9.00am Sung Eucharist in the Church. Teachers and children re-join the congregation in the Church in time for the Offertory, bringing their gifts of tinned food. Parents and children then worship together in the Church for the remainder of the service for the Great Thanksgiving, Communion and Blessing.

Dressing up

Throughout the church year, the children can dress up for feast days and act out stories and characters from the Bible. Many of our children will remember dressing up on the Third Sunday of Advent also known as Gaudete Sunday (meaning “rejoice”) with a surprise visit from John the Baptist. On Palm Sunday, they all processed through the Church as Hebrew children waving palms and ringing bells and singing ‘Hosanna’

Book Club

Children join the Book Club and borrow weekly from a varied and colourful selection of quality books of Bible stories, prayers and activities.

Belltower Books which is open on Sundays at the West Door of the church and the Hall also stocks a wide range of children’s literature and Bibles and  material for parents as well as books for adults and publications of St Laurence Press.

Child Protection

Christ Church St Laurence complies with the Anglican Diocese of Sydney’s policies and practices relating to child protection. Information on these is available at www.sydneyanglicans.net.  If you have any concerns in this regard, please contact us.  See contact details below.

Facilities for Children

At Christ Church St Laurence, we encourage parents to bring children of all ages to our services. We have recently invested in new facilities to make this easier for parents, these include:

·        baby change facilities in our toilets;

·        a play-mat and various 'quiet' toys for younger children

·        a microwave in our kitchen for bottle-warming.

To use any of these facilities, please contact a sidesperson.

We are a breast-feeding friendly parish.

Baptism and Confirmation

Please see our Sacrament page if you would like to arrange for your child to be baptized or confirmed at Christ Church St Laurence.
