Confirmation, 24 June 1990
On 24 June 1990, the Bishop of South Sydney, Rt Rev John Reid confirmed 32 candidates at Christ Church St Laurence. Twenty of these candidates were Chinese people, stranded in Australia as a result of political activity in the wake of the events in Tienamin Square. The Rector at the time, Father Austin Day, wrote: In late June we had a wonderful Confirmation service at CCSL... 32 candidates of whom 20 were Chinese adult students - mostly in Sydney doing English courses. They have been baptised publicly at CCSL, and carefully prepared by Fr James Murray and two lay helpers. Some of the service was translated into Mandarin, and they had two sponsors from the parish family here. They specially requested Western Christian names from the New Testament and Calendar of Saints.
