About the Choir of Christ Church St Laurence
The Choir of Christ Church St Laurence is one of the oldest continuing choral groups in Australia and was founded shortly after the consecration of the Church in 1845. It performs an extensive repertoire incorporating music from Gregorian chant through to compositions from 21st century composers.
The Choir sings every Sunday at the 10.30am Solemn High Mass and again at the 6.30pm Solemn Evensong which uses the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Special music is also provided for all major festivals and feasts throughout the church’s calendar.
Apart from the commitment to liturgical worship the Choir regularly gives concerts. In recent years, performances have included works as varied as Mozart’s Requiem, Lauridsen’s Lux aeterna, Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Bach’s St. John Passion and Christmas Oratorio, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Creation and Arvo Pärt’s Passio, which was sung in the presence of the composer.
The Choir is regularly heard on national radio and has also released several recordings, the most recent being Light’s Glittering Morn, a 2013 release that features music from Lent to Easter and is part of a larger project to record music for the liturgical year. The Choir has toured extensively in New Zealand, Europe, the United States of America and the United Kingdom, including residencies at Westminster Abbey and more recently in December and January 2014-15, at St Paul’s Cathedral, London. The choir also sang the Mass at Notre-Dame in Paris, as well as giving concerts in Brussels and Paris as part of this European Tour.
